Last Day of November 2021

As I walk or run through the streets of my neighborhood, I often look for hidden beauty that photography might showcase. I then make mental notes to visit the objects that had interested me. A week ago today, two hours became available between my morning tasks and two patient appointments later in the afternoon. I grabbed a camera and walked to three of the places I had been noticing.

Alyssum and Fallen Leaves

This is the corner of my wife’s flower garden. The out-of-focus leaf is from my neighbor’s Rocky Mountain maple featured in a recent post. BTW I never imagined that a close-up of concrete could be so interesting in its own right. All in all, another example of a naturally occurring still life.

Grapevine Pruned for Winter

When I was taking this photo, I was attracted to the juxtaposition of the metal wire and the woody vine, but the umber of the leaf and stem stole the show.

Weed and Shadow

The delicate plant and its shadow against the cream-colored fence confuses the eye with the competing layers of focused and out-of-focus elements.

Endnote

Photography is chancy because beautiful objects often do not become wonder evoking pictures. My photography skills are good and improving, but they mean little without the engineers who make today’s cutting-edge cameras and software to develop the images. I thank all the people who make photo equipment available to us.

Hosting often overlooked wonder with photography and writing,

Michael

  1. I like looking at your pictures electronically because I can zoom in and look at the details, like the concrete grains and the fuzz on the plant leaves.
