Introduction
Our third adventure with the Nevada Northern Railway (NNRy) of 18 June 2022 was an excursion north of Ely. The round trip began at 7:15 p.m. MDT and lasted two and a half hours. The outing was timed to witness the sunset on the first leg and the stars on the return leg.

Endnotes
- The Steptoe Valley is one of numerous rift valleys between the north-south trending basins and ranges of the Great Basin.
- Evenings in the desert are enchanting.
- I have always loved trains. When I was a child, everyone knew, “Steam was for freight trains and diesels for passenger trains.” I still recall the disappointing mismatch of first seeing a diesel pulling a freight train.

Fun to read about your train adventure. I especially liked the endnotes about “steam for freight trans and diesel for passenger trains” and the ensuing mismatch disappointment. Love the warmth of the sunset image. Thinking outside the box to see the shape of the shadow of the train.
Thank you for your insightful comments; I always enjoy them immensely. Shadows are often on my mind, and I looked out the window, and there was a shadow of the train. Wildland fires in Utah and Nevada the day before made for the interesting sunset opportunity.
