Band of Sunrise

From late May through late June 2016, some unusually spectacular sunrises greeted the Wasatch Front, the urban corridor nestled between the Wasatch Mountains to the east and the Great Salt Lake, the Great Salt Lake Desert, the Oquirrh Mountains, and Utah Lake on the west. Three sunrises were especially beautiful, and this one on 27 May was the best. During the last three years, I have not witnessed any more to equal this one. Interestingly, the show was to west and not over the Wasatch Mountains to the east and where the sun was actually rising. That morning I had walked out of my house, and the spectacle immediately overwhelmed me. I grabbed my camera and was snatching colors and shapes out of the sky as fast as I could. I was reminded of those TV shows where people can keep any paper money grabbed from the air as it is dropped from a helicopter. Except, perhaps, I could keep some dignity.

For just a minute or so, this gorgeous scene existed, even more ephemeral than a Navajo sand painting.

This is close up looking just left of center of the previous image. This scene is so emotional for me that further words would spoil it.

Color of Sol

In my mind the glowing yellows at the delicate edges of the clouds make this image.

Notice the face in profile complete with upturned nose.

Keep in mind that this is looking west with the sun at my back. Yet the scene is backlit. Just a note about these photos: I have not altered or added colors.
